উনিশ শতকের মাঝামাঝি সময়ের ঘটনা। তখন আমেরিকা যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে দাসপ্রথা বিরোধী আন্দোলন বেশ চাঙা হয়ে উঠেছে। এই উপন্যাসে সেথি নামের একজন আফ্রিকান বংশদ্ভূত মহিলার দাসত্বের জীবন থেকে মুক্তির গল্প বলা হয়েছে। দাসত্বের জীবনের ভয়াবহতা তুলে ধরা হয়েছে উপন্যাসটিতে। উপন্যাসটির সেটিং যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের দক্ষিণের ওহিও (Ohio) প্রদেশের কেনটাকিতে (Kentucky) একটি খামার বাড়ি যার নাম "সুইট হোম" (Sweet Home)।
বাড়ির মালিক মিস্টার গার্নার এবং তার স্ত্রী মিসেস গার্নার দুজনেই বেশ দয়ালু। তাদের খামার বাড়িতে মোট ছয়জন নিগ্রো কৃতদাস ও দাসী কাজ করতো: পল এ (Paul A), পল ডি (Paul D), পল এফ (Paul F) নামের তিন ভাই, সিক্সো (Sixo), হ্যালি (Halle) ও হ্যালির মা বেবি স্যাগস (Baby Suggs). মিস্টার ও মিসেস গার্নার তাদের এই দাসদাসীদের প্রতি যথাসাধ্য মানবিক আচরণ করতেন।
তাই দাসদাসীরাও তাদের মালিককে পছন্দ করতো। বেশ ভালোই চলতেছিলো "সুইট হোম" নামের মিস্টার গার্নারের এই খামারটি। হ্যালির মা বেবি স্যাগস এর বয়স বেড়ে যাওয়ায় তার পক্ষে খামারে কাজ করা কঠিন হয়ে পড়ে। যুবক হ্যালি তার মাকে দাসত্ব থেকে মুক্ত করার ইচ্ছে প্রকাশ করলে মিস্টার গার্নার হ্যালির প্রস্তাবে রাজি হন। হ্যালি সাপ্তাহিক ছুটির দিনগুলোতে অতিরিক্ত কাজ করে যে অর্থ জমায়, সেই অর্থ দিয়ে সে তার মাকে দাসত্ব থেকে মুক্ত করে। মুক্ত হয়ে বেবি স্যাগস (Baby Suggs) উত্তরের একটা প্রদেশ সিনসিনাটি (Cincinnati) শহরে চলে যায়।
এই শহরে মি. বড়ুইন (Mr. Bodwin) নামের এক মহৎ লোক ছিল যিনি দাসপ্রথাকে সমর্থন করতেন না। মি. বড়ুইনের সহযোগিতায় বেবি স্যাগস সেখানে স্বাধীনভাবে বসবাস করতে থাকেন।
সেখানে তার বাসার নং ১২৪, ব্লুস্টোন রোড (Bluestone Road ). কিন্তু সে ছিলো ওই বাড়িতে বড়ো একা। তাই সে বনের মধ্যে খানিকটা জায়গা পরিষ্কার করে সেখানে এলাকার নিগ্রোদের নিয়ে ধর্মসভার ব্যবস্থা করে। প্রতি সপ্তাহে বেবি স্যাগস সেখানে তার সহজসরল ধর্মীয় দর্শন প্রচার করতো। এদিকে 'সুইট হোম' থেকে বেবি স্যাগস চলে যাবার পর, মিসেস গার্নারকে সহযোগিতা করার জন্য তার স্থলে 'সেথি' নামের ১৩ বছরের একটি মেয়েকে কিনে আনা হয়।

সেথি তার পিতৃ মাতৃপরিচয় সম্পর্কে তেমন কিছুই জানতো না। সুইট হোমের নতুন পরিবেশ বিশেষ করে পাঁচ পাঁচটা যুবক পুরুষের মাঝখানে সে নিজেকে বড় অসহায় ভাবতে থাকে। মিসেস গার্নারের স্নেহ ভালবাসায় সে এই প্রতিকূল পরিবেশে নিজেকে ধীরে ধীরে মানিয়ে নেয়। হ্যালির প্রতি সেথির মনে একটু দুর্বলতা তৈরি হয়। তার বয়স যখন মাত্র ১৪ বছর তখন সে হ্যালিকে বিয়ে করতে চায়।
মিস্টার ও মিসেস গার্নার রাজি হয়ে দুজনের বিয়ের ব্যবস্থা করে। সেথির বিছানার বালিশ হ্যালির বিছানাতে স্থানান্তরিত করার মাধ্যমে তাদের বিয়ে সম্পন্ন হয়। সেথি অবশ্য এতে একটু আহত হয় কারণ বিয়ে সম্পর্কে তার রোমান্টিক ধ্যানধারণা ছিলো। পরবর্তীতে একে একে হ্যালি ও সেথির দুটি ছেলে (হাওয়ার্ড এবং বাগলার) ও একটি মেয়ের জন্ম হয়। হঠাৎ করে মিস্টার গার্নার মারা যায়। মিসেস গার্নারও অসুস্থ হয়ে পড়ে। তার পক্ষে একা একা সুইট হোমের খামার চালানো অসম্ভব হয়ে পড়ে।
সে মিস্টার গার্নারের এক ভাইকে সুইট হোম পরিচালনার দায়িত্ব দেয়। দাসদের কাছে তিনি স্কুলশিক্ষক (School Teacher) নামে পরিচিত। এই স্কুলশিক্ষক লোকটা ছিল বড় কঠোর, অত্যাচারী, বদমেজাজী, বর্ণবাদী ও নিষ্ঠুর প্রকৃতির মানুষ। সে তার দুই ভাগ্নেকে একসাথে নিয়ে খুব কঠিন শাসনে সুইট হোম পরিচালনা করতে শুরু করে। সব দাস-দাসীদের তারা নানাভাবে অত্যাচার করতে থাকে। কিছুদিনের মধ্যেই সুইট হোমের দাস দাসীরা বিদ্রোহী হয়ে ওঠে। তারা সুইট হোম থেকে গোপনে পালানোর পরিকল্পনা করে।
কিন্তু তাদের পরিকল্পনা ফাঁস হয়ে যায় যার ফলে তাদেরকে সম্মুখীন হতে হয় কঠিন শাস্তির। সিক্সো ছিল এই পরিকল্পনার নেতা, তাই তাকে জ্যান্ত পুড়িয়ে মারার ব্যবস্থা করা হয়। সে পাগল হয়ে যায়, পরে তাকে গুলি করে মারা হয়। পল-এ ও পল-এফ কে ফাঁসিতে ঝুলানো হয়। পল-ডি কে কঠিন শাস্তি দিয়ে তার গলায় লোহার বালা ও শিকল পরিয়ে রাখা হয়। হ্যালিকে এমন অত্যাচার করা হয় যে, সে পাগল হয়ে কোথায় চলে যায় কেউ তা বলতে পারেনা।
স্কুলশিক্ষকের ভাগ্নেরা সেথিকে ধর্ষণ করে ও তার বুকের দুধ চুরি করে নেয়। সেথি মিসেস গার্নারের কাছে এ অন্যায়ের বিচার চায়, কিন্তু মিসেস গার্নারের তখন করার কিছুই ছিলনা। উপরন্তু সেথিকে গরুর চামড়ার চাবুক দিয়ে এমনভাবে চাপকানো হয় যে তার পিঠ ছিন্নভিন্ন হয়ে যায়। সেথি এবার নিজে নিজেই পালানোর সিদ্ধান্ত নেয়।
প্রথমে সে অতি গোপনে তার বাচ্চাদের পলাতক দাসদের সাথে একটি ওয়াগনে তুলে তার শাশুড়ির কাছে ১২৪, ব্লুস্টোন রোডের বাড়িতে পাঠিয়ে দেয় এবং রাতেরবেলা সে বনের মধ্য দিয়ে একা একা পালিয়ে যায়। তখন সে পূর্ণ গর্ভবতী। পেটে তার জন্মের অপেক্ষায় প্রায় পরিপূর্ণ একটি বাচ্চা। এ অবস্থায় পালাতে তার কষ্ট হয়। তবুও সে বনের বিপদসংকুল পথ ধরে পালাতে থাকে। বনের পথে চলতে চলতে সেথি একটি পাহাড়ের পাশে এসে থেমে যায়।
তার প্রসব বেদনা শুরু হয়ে গেছে। সে আর চলতে পারেনা। পাহাড়ি রাস্তার ধারে একটি জলাভূমিতে সেথি বড় বড় ঘাসের মধ্যে শুয়ে পড়ে এবং অসহ্য যন্ত্রনায় কোঁকাতে থাকে। ঐ রাস্তা দিয়ে পালাচ্ছিল একজন সাদা ক্রীতদাসী মহিলা। তার নাম 'অ্যামি ডেনভার'। তার গায়ের চামড়া সাদা হলেও সে একজন ক্রীতদাসী ছাড়া আর কিছুই ছিলোনা। সেথির কোঁকানি শুনতে পেয়ে অ্যামি তার কাছে এগিয়ে যায়, এবং সেথির অবস্থা দেখে প্রথমে ভয় পেয়ে যায়। সে কালোদের মোটেই পছন্দ করত না বরং ঘৃণা করত।
মেয়েটি একটু পাগলাটে ধরনের ছিল। সেথি বাচ্চা প্রসব করবে বুঝতে পেরে তার প্রতি অ্যামির মায়া হল। সে সেথিকে অনেকটা জোর করেই পাশের একটি পরিত্যক্ত কুঁড়েঘরে নিয়ে যায় এবং সেখানে যথেষ্ট পরিশ্রম ও যত্ন করে সেথিকে সচল করে তোলে। পরে ওহিও নদীর পারে একটা নৌকায় সেথি একটি কন্যা সন্তান প্রসব করে। 'অ্যামি ডেনভারের নাম অনুসারে সেথি তার মেয়ের নাম রাখেন ডেনভার (Denver)। সেথি ও তার বাচ্চাকে একাকী নদীর পাড়ে রেখে অ্যামি ডেনভার" তার নিজের গন্তব্যে চলে যায়। বাচ্চাকে কোনোরকম গরম কাপড়ে মুড়ে, সেথি নদীর কিনারা ধরে রওনা হল।
কিভাবে নদী পার হবে তার কোনো কূল কিনারা খুঁজে পাচ্ছিল না সে। হঠাৎ স্ট্যাম পেড (Stamp Paid) নামের এক মাঝিকে দেখতে পায় সেথি যার কাজই ছিল পলাতক দাসদের ওপারে পৌঁছাতে সাহায্য করা। স্ট্যাম পেড সেথিকে নৌকায় তুলে নেয় এবং ওপারে পৌঁছে দেয়। এই মাঝির সহায়তায় সেথি সিনসিনাটি শহরে ১২৪ নং বাড়িতে তার শাশুড়ির কাছে এসে পৌঁছায়।
শাশুড়ী বেবি স্যাগস তার পুত্রবধূ ও নতুন একটি নাতনি পেয়ে দারুন খুশি, কিন্তু ছেলে হ্যালিকে তাদের সাথে না দেখতে পেয়ে কিছুটা আহত হয়। সে নতুন শিশুটির এবং তার মা সেথির প্রয়োজনীয় সেবার ব্যবস্থা করে। সেথি ২৮ দিন তার শাশুড়ির যত্নে ও আদরে মুক্ত মানুষ হিসাবে
মহাশান্তিতে বাস করতে থাকে। ২৮ দিন পর 'সুইট হোমের' স্কুলশিক্ষক তার দুই ভাগ্নে, এলাকার বিচারক (শেরিফ), একজন দাস ধরা লোককে সাথে নিয়ে ১২৪ নং বাড়িতে আসে সিথিকে ফিরিয়ে নেবার জন্যে। সেথি স্কুলশিক্ষকে দেখেই চমকে উঠে এবং বুঝতে পারে যে তাকে আবার সুইট হোমে ফিরে যেতে হবে, তাকে ও তার সন্তানদের দাসত্বের শিকল পরতে হবে। সেথি হিতাহিত জ্ঞান হারিয়ে ফেলে, এবং সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়, সে তার সব সন্তানকে নিজের হাতে হত্যা করবে, তারপর নিজে আত্মহত্যা করে সবাইকে চিরদিনের জন্য দাসত্ব থেকে মুক্তি দেবে, তবুও আর দাসত্বকে বরণ করবে না।

সেই মোতাবেক খুব দ্রুত সে তার সব সন্তানদের নিয়ে কাঠ রাখার ঘরে ঢুকে পড়ে। প্রথমে সে তার ছেলেদের মেরে মেঝেতে ফেলে দেয়, পরে করাত দিয়ে বড় মেয়ের গলা কেটে ফেলে। বড় মেয়েকে বুকে জড়িয়ে রেখেই ছোট মেয়ের মাথা দেয়ালের সাথে ঠুকতে থাকে। বেবি স্যাগস আর স্ট্যাম পেড ছুটে এসে সেথিকে থামায়। ভাগ্যগুণে ছেলে দুটো তখনো বেঁচে ছিল। বেবি স্যাগস সেবা করে ছেলে দুটোকে বাচিঁয়ে তোলে। সেথি তখন সম্পূর্ণ উন্মাদ। সেথির কার্যকলাপ দেখে স্কুলশিক্ষক তার দলবল নিয়ে পালায়। এরপর সেথি তার মৃত বাচ্চাটিকে কবর দেয় এবং কবরের পাথরে তার নাম লিখে দেয় "বিলাভেড" (Beloved). বিচার অনুযায়ী সেথিকে গ্রেফতার করা হয়।
বিচারে তার কয়েক বছরের জেল হয়। সেথি তার ছোটো মেয়েটিকে নিয়ে জেলে চলে যায়। এলাকার সব লোক সেথিকে তার এই জঘন্য কাজের জন্য ঘৃণা করতে থাকে। জেলখাটা শেষে যখন সেথি ফিরে আসে, তখনও সে সমাজের মানুষের কাছে ভয়াবহ ঘূর্ণিত মহিলা হিসেবে চিহ্নিত হয়ে থাকে। কেউই তার প্রকৃত অবস্থা বোঝার চেষ্টা করে না ৷ আশেপাশের মানুষজন সেথির পরিবারকে পর্যন্ত এড়িয়ে চলতে শুরু করে।
জীবনধারণের জন্য সেথি মি. বড়ুইনের সহযোগিতায় একটি রেস্তোরাঁয় রাধুনির কাজ জোগাড় করে নেয় এবং কারো সমালোচনা তোয়াক্কা না করে, তার শাশুড়ি, এক মেয়ে এবং দুই ছেলেকে নিয়ে নিজের মতো স্বাধীন জীবনযাপন করতে থাকে। সেথির স্বামী হ্যালি আর ফিরে আসে না কখনোই। সমাজের লোকের অবজ্ঞা আর উপেক্ষা সত্ত্বেও সেথির দিন ভালোই যাচ্ছিলো। এদিকে তাদের ১২৪ নং বাড়িতে নতুন এক উপদ্রব শুরু হলো: ভূতের উপদ্রব। ভূতের আচরণ দেখে বোঝা গেল, ওটা একটা শিশু ভূত।
সবাই অনুমান করল, ওটা মৃত বিলাভেডের অতৃপ্ত ক্ষুব্ধ আত্মা ছাড়া আর কিছু না। সেই ক্ষুব্ধ ভূত সময়ে অসময়ে নানা রকম ঝামেলা করতে শুরু করতো। যদিও ভূতটা কারো কোনো ক্ষতি করছে না, তবুও বাড়ির ছেলে মেয়েরা সবাই সর্বদা ভূতের ভয়ে আতংকিত। একদিন অকারণেই বেসিনের সামনের আয়নাটা ভেঙ্গে চুরমার হয়ে গেল। কিছুদিন পর, কেকের উপর একটি ছোট হাতের তালুর ছাপ দেখতে পেয়ে সবাই অনুমান করল, ওটা ভূতের হাতের ছাপ। ভূতের ভয়ে সেথির দুই ছেলে হাওয়ার্ড (Howard) এবং বাগলার (Buglar) বাড়ি ছেড়েই পালিয়ে যায়।
অবাক কাণ্ড হলো, ডেনভার (Denver) সবথেকে বেশি ভয় পেলেও মনে মনে সে ওই ভূতের অপেক্ষায় থাকত। ডেনভার বাড়িতে খুব নিঃসঙ্গ ছিল। সে মনে করতো, ভূতটা তার বড় বোন বিলাভেড যে শুধু তাকে সঙ্গ দেয়ার জন্য মাঝে মাঝে ওভাবে বাড়িতে আসে। তাই ভূতকে নিয়ে তার সমস্যা নেই, যদিও ভূত যখন আসে, তখন সে ভয় পায়। ভূতের প্রতি ভয় ও ভালোবাসা দুটোই একসাথে কাজ করতে থাকে ডেনভারের মধ্যে। বেবি স্যাগস কিছুই বলে না, সব কিছু দেখে, অনেক দিন ধরেই সে বিছানায় পড়ে আছে অসুস্থতায়। সে এখন মৃত্যুর প্রহর গুনছে।
তারপর একদিন বেবি স্যাগস মারা গেলো। সেথি ও ডেনভার আরো একাকী হয়ে পড়লো। অন্যদিকে ভূত টাও আর আসলো না। তারপর কেটে যায় বেশ কয়েক বছর। ডেনভারের বয়স এখন ১৮ বছর। হঠাৎ একদিন সেথি তাদের বাসায় নতুন এক অতিথিকে তার ঘরের বারান্দায় বসে থাকতে দেখে চমকে উঠলো। এই অতীথি তার "সুইট হোমের" হ্যালির বন্ধু পল-ডি। উনিশ বছর পরে তার সাথে সেথির দেখা। এক সময় "সুইট হোমে" তারা খুব কাছাকাছি ছিলো। দুজন দুজনকে খুব কাছ থেকে চিনতো। একই সাথে মাঠে কাজ করেছে, একই সাথে পালানোর চেষ্টা করছে, একই সাথে শাস্তি ভোগ করেছে। সেই পুরাতন বন্ধু পল-ডি কে দেখে সেথি দারুন খুশি।

পল ডি সেথি কে জানায়, স্কুলশিক্ষক পল ডি-কে ব্রান্ডিওয়াইন (Brandywine) নামের আরেকজন দাস মালিকের কাছে বিক্রি করে দিয়েছিল। ব্রান্ডওয়াইনকে হত্যার চেষ্টা করায় পল ডি- কে জর্জিয়ার (Georgia) একটি chain gang' এ অনেক অত্যাচার করা হয়। এই কষ্টদায়ক অভিজ্ঞতার কারণে পল তার সব স্মৃতি, আবেগ এবং ভালবাসার ক্ষমতাকে নিজ হৃদয়ের tin tobacco box- এ তালাবন্ধ করে রাখেন। একদিন ঝড়বৃষ্টির মধ্যে পল ডি এবং chain gang'এর বাকি সদস্যরা পালানারে সুযাগে পান এবং তারা পালান এবং অনেক বছর পরে ঘটনাক্রমে তিনি সেথির বাড়িতে এসে পৌছান।
এভাবেই পল ডি অনেক দিন জেল খেটে, অনেক দূর্ভোগ সহ্য করে, অনেক পথ হেঁটে হেঁটে দীর্ঘ উনিশ বছর পর সে এসেছে বেবি স্যাগস ও সেথির সাথে দেখা করতে। এসেই সে শুনলো বেবি স্যাগস আর নেই। ৮ বছর আগে মারা গেছেন বেবি স্যাগস। পল ডি'র উপস্থিতিতে সেথির মনে প্রায় দুই দশক ধরে ঘুমন্ত থাকা স্মৃতিগুলো জেগে ওঠে। পল ডি সেথির বাড়িতেই থাকা শুরু করে। সেথি এবং পল ডি একসাথে একটি সম্ভাবনাময় ভবিষ্যতের দিকে এগুতে থাকে। সেথির ১২৪ নং বাড়িতে পল ডি পড়ে ভুতের খপ্পরে। সারা বাড়ি কাপিয়ে ভুত যখন পল ডি'কে ভয় দেখাতে শুরু করলো,
পল ডি হাতের কাছে পাওয়া একটি টেবিল হাতে নিয়ে চারদিকে ঘুরিয়ে চিৎকার চেচামেচি করে ভুতকেই এমন ভয় পাইয়ে দিল যে ভুত নিজেই পালিয়ে বাচলো। ভূত চলে গেলে ডেনভারের মন খারাপ হয়ে গেলো। ডেনভার চাচ্ছিলো না পল ডি এ বাড়িতে থাকুক আর ভূতটি এ বাড়ি থেকে চলে যাক। পল-ডিয়ের সাথে সেথি সুইট হোমের অতীত স্মৃতি নিয়ে কথা বলছে, ডেনভার তখন নিজেকে বড় বেশি নিঃসঙ্গ মনে করছে। মনে করছে তার মা তাকে ফেলে অন্য জগতে চলে গেছে। অতএব, ডেনভার পলডি'র সাথে খারাপ আচরণ করা শুরু করে।
পল ডি এতে আহত হয়। সেথি ডেনভারকে শাসন করে। আস্তে ধীরে পলডির সাথে ডেনভারের সম্পর্ক স্বাভাবিক হয়ে আসে। পল ডি ১২৪ নং বাড়িতে থেকে যায়। নিঃসঙ্গ জীবনে সেথি পলডি কে পেয়ে দারুন খুশি হয়। একদিন পলডি সেথি ও ডেনভারকে সাথে নিয়ে কারনিভালের (Carnival) মেলাতে বেড়াতে যায়। পল ডি তার সঞ্চিত ২ ডলার আনন্দের সাথে সেথি ও ডেনভারের পিছনে খরচ করে ফেলে। ডেনভার খুব খুশি হয়। পলডি ডেনভারের কাছে অনেকটা প্রিয় হয়ে উঠে। মেলা শেষে তিন জনে হাত ধরাধরি করে বাড়ি ফেরে। তিনজন ১২৪ নং বাড়িতে পৌঁছে দেখতে পায়, বাড়ির সামনে গাছের গোড়ায় একটি কালো মেয়ে শুয়ে আছে। মেয়েটি খুবই দূর্বল। ঠিকমতো মাথা তুলতে পারছে না।
বয়স ঠিক অনুমান করা যাচ্ছে না। ডেনভারের থেকে দু এক বছর বেশিও হতে পারে। আবার কমও হতে পারে। মেয়েটিকে ঘরে নিয়ে আপাতত তার যত্ন নেয়া হয়। মেয়েটি আস্তে ধীরে সুস্থ হয়ে ওঠে। এই মেয়েটি নিজেকে "বিলাবেড" নামে পরিচয় দেয়। এর বেশি কিছুই সে মনে করতে পারছে না। তার স্মৃতিতে আর কিছুই নেই। দ্বিতীয়ত ডেনভার মেয়েটিকে ভালবাসে কারণ সে তার নিঃসঙ্গ জীবনের জীবন্ত সঙ্গী। বিলাভেড ১২৪ নং বাড়িতে আশ্রয় পেয়ে যায়। শুধু পল ডি বিলাভেডকে পছন্দ করে না কারণ সবার আকর্ষন এখন বিলাভেডের দিকে।

পল ডি বারবার জানার চেষ্টা করে মেয়েটির আসল পরিচয় কি। মেয়েটি কিছুই বলতে পারে না। পল ডি'র উপর তার রাগ বাড়ে, সে পল ডি'কে ঘৃণা করতে থাকে। তাছাড়া পল ডি'র সাথে সেথির ঘনিষ্ঠতা বিলাভেড ভালভাবে নেয় না। সে চায় সেথি শুধু তার দিকে মনোযোগ দিক। বিলাভেড পল ডি কে তার ইচ্ছের বিরুদ্ধে seduce করে এবং বাড়িতে তাকে পুতুলের মত ঘোড়াতে থাকে।

সেথি তাকে কিছুই বলল না। দিনে দিনে বিলাভেডের নানা কার্যকলাপে সেথির ধারণা হয় যে এই বিলাভেডই তার মৃত মেয়ে বিলাভেড, যাকে সেথি একদিন দাসত্ব থেকে মুক্ত রাখতে নিজের হাতে হত্যা করেছিল। মৃত বিলাভেডের আত্মা আবার নতুনভাবে শারীরিক রূপ নিতে তার কাছে ফিরে এসেছে। ডেনভার নিজেও বিশ্বাস করতে থাকে যে বিলাভেড তার বড় বোন যাকে তার মা একদিন গলা কেটে হত্যা করেছিল।
বিলাভেডের প্রভাব ১২৪ নং বাড়িতে দিন দিন বাড়তে থাকে। সেথি সর্বদা এক ধরনের অপরাধবোধে ভুগতে থাকে। সে বিলাভেডকে বোঝাতে চেষ্টা করে কেন সে তাকে হত্যা করেছিলো। কিন্তু বিলাভেড সেথির কোন যুক্তিই মানতে রাজি নয়। সেথি প্রানপণে তাকে খুশি রাখতে চেষ্টা করে, কিন্তু বিলাভেড কিছুতেই খুশি হয় না। সেথির ভয়, কখন আবার বিলাভেড তাকে ছেড়ে পালিয়ে যায়। সে তার ফিরে পাওয়া মেয়েকে আর কোনোভাবেই হারাতে চায় না।
তাই বিলাভেড যেমনটি চায়, তেমনটি করতে থাকে সেথি। এক সময় সেথি ক্লান্ত হয়ে পড়ে, কাজে যাওয়ার আগ্রহ হারিয়ে ফেলে, তার চাকরি চলে যায়। বাড়িতে খাবারের অভাব দেখা দেয়, সেথি নিজে না খেয়ে বিলাভেডকে খাওয়ায়। বিলাভেড শুধু বসে বসে খায় আর মোটা হতে থাকে। এদিকে সেথি না খেয়ে খেয়ে দুর্বল হয়ে পড়ে। সেথি বিলাভেডকে প্রচন্ড ভালোবাসে এবং তাকে ভয় পায়। এক সময় সেথি অসুস্থ হয়ে বিছানা নেয়৷ এদিকে ডেনভার পরে যায় বিপদে। যে মেয়ে কখনও বাড়ির বাইরে যায়নি, তাকেই চাকরির খোজে বাইরে বের হতে হয়। ডেনভার ১২ বছরের মধ্যে প্রথমবার বাড়ি ছাড়ে এবং সাহায্যের জন্য তার সাবেক শিক্ষিকা (Lady Jones) এর কাছে যায়।
Community এর লোকজন তার পরিবারকে খাবার দিয়ে সাহায্য করে। তারপর ডেনভার একটা কাজ খুঁজতে শুরু করে। কিন্তু কাজ পাওয়া তো এত সহজ না। অগত্যা সমাজের লোকদের দানে সে তার মা বোন ও নিজেকে বাঁচিয়ে রাখার চেষ্টা করে। মা সেথি ক্রমেশ এতোটাই দুর্বল ও সংসার বিমুখ হয়ে পড়ে যে ডেনভারকে নিয়ে তার কোনো মাথা ব্যাথাই নেই। সে দিন রাত শুয়ে শুধু ভাবে কখন বুঝি বিলাভেড তাকে ফেলে পালিয়ে যায়। ডেনভার অসহায়ের মতো কাজের সন্ধানে এখানে সেখানে ঘুরতে ঘুরতে অবশেষে মি. বড়ুইনের বাড়িতে কাজ পেয়ে যায়।

একদিন বড়ুইন গাড়ি নিয়ে ডেনভারকে নিতে আসে। শারীরিক ও মানষিক অসুস্থ সেথি মনে করে বড়ুইন তার মেয়েদের ধরে নিতে এসেছে। আসলে মি. বড়ুইনকে সেথি ভেবেছিল সেই স্কুলশিক্ষক। তাই সেথি একটুকরো ধারালো বরফ খন্ড নিয়ে বড়ুইনকে হত্যা করতে ছুটে যায়, ডেনভার ছুটে এসে সেথিকে ধরে ফেলে এবং বড়ুইনকে রক্ষা করে। বড়ুইন বড়োই মহৎ প্রান মানুষ। সে সেথির এই আচরণে কিছু মনে করে না। তাকে মন থেকে ক্ষমা করে দেয়া এদিকে সমাজে রটে যায় যে ১২৪ নং বাড়িতে একটি ভূতের উপদ্রব হয়েছে যার নাম বিলভেড। সে সেথির উপর ভর করেছে এবং তাকে দিয়ে বড়ুইনকে হত্যা করার চেষ্টা করেছে। সেই ভূত সেথিকে চুষে চুষে খেয়ে ফেলছে।
এক দিন এলা (Ella) নামের এক মহিলা প্রায় বিশ ত্রিশ জন মহিলাকে সাথে নিয়ে ১২৪ নং বাড়িতে আসে এবং এমন সব মন্ত্র পড়ে যে পর দিন আর বিলভেডকে ১২৪ নং বাড়িত দেখা যায় না। কেউ কেউ বলে বিলভেড বিস্ফারিত হয়ে হাওয়ায় মিশে গেছে। কেউ বলে তারা বিলাভেড কে দুএক সেকেন্ড দেখেছে যার পর সে অদৃশ্য হয়ে গেছে। কেউ বলে তারা বিলাভেডকে বনের দিকে যেতে দেখেছে, তার মাথায় ছিলো ঝুলছিল মাছের মতো চুল। এদিকে খবর পেয়ে পল-ডি ছুটে এল ১২৪ নং বাড়িতে। সেথির অবস্থা দেখে তার খুব মায়া হলো।
সেথির সাথে তার দীর্ঘ দিনের অতীত স্মৃতি মনে পরে গেলো। সে ভাবলো এই মুহূর্তে সত্যিকার বন্ধুর মতো সেথির পাশে থাকা তার একান্ত কর্তব্য। সে সেথির সেবা করতে লেগে যায়। ডেনভারকে বলল তোমার ভয় নেই, আসি তোমার মা'র পাশে আছি। তুমি নিশ্চিতে তোমার কাজ করো। সেথি পলের দিকে তাকিয়ে কাঁদতে কাঁদতে বলল, জানো' আমার বিলাভেড আমাকে ছেড়ে চলে গেছে। ও আর কখনও আসবে না। বেশ কিছু দিন বিলাভেডকে নিয়ে কুসংস্কারআচ্ছন্ন সমাজে নানা রকম উদ্ভট কথা চালু ছিল। তারপর সমাজের লোকেরা সব ভুলে গেছে। ১২৪ নং বাড়ির লোকেরা যারা বিলাভেডকে ভালবাসতো তারা আরো কিছুদিন বিলাভেড কে মনে রেখেছিলো।

They sought refuge in Ohio, but their owner and law officers soon caught up with the family. Before their recapture, Margaret killed her young daughter to prevent her return to slavery.

Sethe:- The protagonist of Beloved, is a proud and independent woman who is extremely devoted to her children. She has spent many years as a slave at Sweet Home. In the middle of the novel, she attempts to murder her children in an act of motherly love and protection.
Beloved:- Beloved's identity is mysterious. On an allegorical level, Beloved represents the inescapable, horrible past of slavery returned to haunt the present.
Denver:- Sethe's youngest child, Denver is the most dynamic character in the novel. Though intelligent, introspective, and sensitive, Denver has been stunted in her emotional growth by years of relative isolation.
Baby Suggs:- After Halle buys his mother, Baby Suggs, her freedom, she travels to Cincinnati, where she becomes a source of emotional and spiritual inspiration for the city's black residents. Baby Suggs holds religious gatherings at a place called the Clearing, where she teaches her followers to love their voices, bodies, and minds.
The Schoolteacher:- Following Mr. Garner's death, schoolteacher takes charge of Sweet Home. Cold, sadistic, and vehemently racist, schoolteacher replaces what he views as Garner's too-soft approach with an oppressive regime of rigid rules and punishment on the plantation.
Halle: Sethe's husband and Baby Suggs's son, Halle is generous, kind, and sincere. Halle eventually goes mad, presumably after witnessing schoolteacher's nephews' violation of Sethe.
Amy Denver:- A nurturing and compassionate girl who works as an
indentured servant, Amy is young, flighty, talkative, and idealistic. She helps Sethe when she is ill during her escape from Sweet Home, and when she sees Sethe's wounds from being whipped, Amy says that they resemble a tree. She later delivers baby Denver, whom Sethe names after her.
Mr. and Mrs. Garner:- Mr. and Mrs. Garner are the comparatively benevolent owners of Sweet Home.
Ella:- Ella worked with Stamp Paid on the Underground Railroad.
Mr. and Miss Bodwin:- Siblings Mr. and Miss Bodwin are white abolitionists who have played an active role in winning Sethe's freedom.
Stamp Paid:- Like Baby Suggs, Stamp Paid is considered by the community to be a figure of salvation, and he is welcomed at every door in town.
Paul D:- The physical and emotional brutality suffered by Paul D at Sweet Home and as part of a chain gang has caused him to bury his feelings in the "rusted tobacco tin" of his heart. Sethe welcomes him to 124, where he becomes her lover and the object of Denver's and Beloved's jealousy.
Paul A, Paul F, and Sixo:- Paul A and Paul F are the brothers of Paul D. They were slaves at Sweet Home with him, Halle, Sethe, and, earlier, Baby Suggs. Sixo is another fellow slave. Sixo and Paul A die during the escape from the plantation.

Sethe believes they fled because of the malevolent presence of an abusive ghost that has haunted their house at 124 Bluestone Road for years. Denver, however, likes the ghost, which everyone believes to be the spirit of her dead sister. All the incidents are described in flashback.
On the day the novel begins, Paul D, whom Sethe has not seen since they worked together on Mr. Garner's Sweet Home plantation in Kentucky approximately twenty years earlier, stops by Sethe's house. His presence resurrects memories that have lain buried in Sethe's mind for almost two decades. From this point on, the story will unfold on two temporal planes. The present in Cincinnati constitutes one plane, while a series of events that took place around twenty years earlier, mostly in Kentucky, constitutes the other.
This latter plane is accessed and described through the fragmented flashbacks of the major characters. Accordingly, we frequently read these flashbacks several times, sometimes from varying perspectives, with each successive narration of an event adding a little more information to the previous ones. From these fragmented memories, the following story begins to emerge: Sethe, the protagonist, was born in the South to an African mother she never knew.
When she is thirteen, she is sold to the Garners, who own Sweet Home and practice a comparatively benevolent kind of slavery. There, the other slaves, who are all men, lust after her but never touch her. Their names are Sixo, Paul D, Paul A, Paul F, and Halle. Sethe chooses to marry Halle, apparently in part because he has proven generous enough to buy
his mother's freedom by hiring himself out on the weekends. Together, Sethe and Halle have two sons, Howard and Buglar, as well as a baby daughter whose name we never learn. When she leaves Sweet Home, Sethe is also pregnant with a fourth child. After the eventual death of the proprietor, Mr. Garner, the widowed Mrs. Garner asks her sadistic, vehemently racist brother-in-law to help her run the farm.
He is known to the slaves as schoolteacher, and his oppressive presence makes life on the plantation even more unbearable than it had been before. The slaves decide to run. Schoolteacher and his nephews anticipate the slaves' escape, however, and capture Paul D and Sixo. Schoolteacher kills Sixo and brings Paul D back to Sweet Home, where Paul D sees Sethe for what he believes will be the last time. She is still intent on running, having already sent her children ahead to her mother-in-law Baby Suggs's house in Cincinnati.
Invigorated by the recent capture, schoolteacher's nephews seize Sethe in the barn and violate her, stealing the milk her body is storing for her infant daughter. Unbeknownst to Sethe, Halle is watching the event from a loft above her, where he lies frozen with horror. Afterward, Halle goes mad: Paul D sees him sitting by a churn with butter slathered all over his face. Paul D, meanwhile, is forced to suffer the indignity of wearing an iron bit in his mouth. When schoolteacher finds out that Sethe has reported his and his nephews' misdeeds to Mrs. Garner, he has her whipped severely, despite the fact that she is pregnant.
Swollen and scarred, Sethe nevertheless runs away, but along the way she collapses from exhaustion in a forest. A white girl, Amy Denver, finds her and nurses her back to health. When Amy later helps Sethe deliver her baby in a boat, Sethe names this second daughter Denver after the girl who helped her. Sethe receives further help from Stamp Paid, who rows her across the Ohio River to Baby Suggs's house. Baby Suggs cleans Sethe up before allowing her to see her three older children. Sethe spends twenty-eight wonderful days in Cincinnati, where Baby Suggs serves as an unofficial preacher to the black community.
On the last day, however, schoolteacher comes for Sethe to take her and her children back to Sweet Home. Rather than surrender her children to a life of dehumanizing slavery, she flees with them to the woodshed and tries to kill them. Only the third child, her older daughter, dies, her throat having been cut with a handsaw by Sethe. Sethe later arranges for the baby's headstone to be carved with the word "Beloved." The sheriff takes Sethe and Denver to jail, but a group of white abolitionists, led by the Bodwins, fights for her release. Sethe returns to the house at 124, where Baby Suggs has sunk into a deep depression.
The community shuns the house, and the family continues to live in isolation. Meanwhile, Paul D has endured torturous experiences in a chain gang in Georgia, where he was sent after trying to kill Brandywine, a slave owner to whom he was sold by schoolteacher. His traumatic experiences have caused him to lock away his memories, emotions, and ability to love in the "tin tobacco box" of his heart. One day, a fortuitous rainstorm allows Paul D and the other chain gang members to escape. He travels northward by following the blossoming spring flowers. Years later, he ends up on Sethe's porch in Cincinnati.
Paul D's arrival at 124 commences the series of events taking place in the present time frame. Prior to moving in, Paul D chases the house's resident ghost away, which makes the already lonely Denver resent him from the start. Sethe and Paul D look forward to a promising future together, until one day, on their way home from a carnival, they encounter a strange young woman sleeping near the steps of 124. Most of the characters believe that the woman-who calls herself Beloved-is the embodied spirit of Sethe's dead daughter, and the novel provides a wealth of evidence supporting this interpretation.
Denver develops an obsessive attachment to Beloved, and Beloved's attachment to Sethe is equally if not more intense. Paul D and Beloved hate each other, and Beloved controls Paul D by moving him around the house like a rag doll and by seducing him against his will. When Paul D learns the story of Sethe's "rough choice" her infanticide he leaves 124 and begins sleeping in the basement of the local church. In his absence, Sethe and Beloved's relationship becomes more intense and exclusive.
Beloved grows increasingly abusive, manipulative, and parasitic, and Sethe is obsessed with satisfying Beloved's demands and making her understand why she murdered her. Worried by the way her mother is wasting away, Denver leaves the premises of 124 for the first time in twelve years in order to seek help from Lady Jones, her former teacher. The community provides the family with food and eventually organizes under the leadership of Ella, a woman who had worked on the Underground Railroad and helped with Sethe's escape, in order to exorcise Beloved from 124. When they arrive at Sethe's house, they see Sethe on the porch with Beloved, who stands smiling at them, naked and pregnant.
Mr. Bodwin, who has come to 124 to take Denver to her new job, arrives at the house. Mistaking him for schoolteacher, Sethe runs at Mr. Bodwin with an ice pick. She is restrained, but in confusion, Beloved disappears, never to return. Afterward, Paul D comes back to Sethe, who has retreated to Baby Suggs's bed to die. Mourning Beloved, Sethe laments, "She was my best thing". But Paul D replies, "You your best thing, Sethe". The novel then ends with a warning that "[t]his is not a story to pass on'. The town, and even the residents of 124, have forgotten Beloved "like an unpleasant dream during a troubling sleep".
