Goodman Brown:- A young resident of Salem and the story’s protagonist. Goodman Brown is a goodChristian who has recently married Faith. However, being curious, he leads a
journey for the sake of accepting an invitation from a mysterious traveler to
observe an evil ceremony in middle of the forest, one that shocks and
disillusions him.
Faith:- Goodman Brown’s
wife. Faith is young, beautiful, and trusting. Although Goodman Brown initially
ignores Faith’s
claims to have had disturbing nightmares, seeing her at the evil ceremony in
the forest prompts him to question his wife’s righteousness.
The Old Man/Devil:- The man, possibly the representative of devil, who tempts
Goodman Brown into attending the ceremony in the forest.
Goody Cloyse:- A citizen of Salem Village who reveals herself to be a witch.
Goody Cloyse is a Christian woman who helps young people learn the Bible, but
in secret she performs magic ceremonies and attends witch meetings in the
forest. Goody Cloyse was the name of an actual woman who was tried and
convicted of witchcraft during the historical Salem Witch Trials of 1692.
The Minister:- The minister of Salem. The minister, a respectable pillar of the
community, appears to be a follower of the devil.
Deacon Gookin:- A member of the clergy in Salem who appears to be a follower of
the devil.
Goodman Brown’s
Father:- Goodman Brown’s father, who died before the story’s start. The devil
tells Goodman that he and Goodman’s father were close friends, and describes
helping his father set fire to an Indian village during King Philip’s war.
Goodman Brown’s
Mother:- Goodman Brown’s mother, who died before the story’s start. Goodman
Brown thinks he sees her form in the smoke at the devil’s conversion ceremony
warning him(her husband) to resist the devil.
Goodman’s
Grandfather:- Goodman Brown’s grandfather, who died before the story’s start.
The devil tells Goodman that he and Goodman’s grandfather were close friends,
and describes helping his grandfather to whip a Quaker woman (Quakers were a
different Christian religious sect from the Puritans) through the streets of
Salem.

আত্ম-অনুসন্ধানের ভ্রমণের মধ্য দিয়ে শুরু হয়, ফল হিসেবে সে তার সদগুণ এবং বিশ্বাস হারায়।

গল্পটি শুরু হয় এক সন্ধ্যায় সালেম নামেরএক গ্রামে যেখানে ইয়াং গুডম্যান ব্রাউন তার স্ত্রী ফেইথকে বিদায় জানাচ্ছে। টুপিতে
গোলাপি রিবন পড়ে থাকা স্ত্রী ফেইথের সাথে তার তিন মাসের বৈবাহিক সম্পর্ক। স্ত্রীকে
ঘরে একা রেখে গুডম্যান ব্রাউন একটি অজ্ঞাত ভ্রমণে বনের মধ্য দিয়ে যাত্রা করছে।
ফেইথ তার স্বামীকে অনুরোধ করেন তার সাথে থাকার জন্যে কারণ তার একা থাকতে ভয় করে।
কিন্তু গুডম্যান ব্রাউন জোর করে বলে যে এই ভ্রমণ তার এই রাতের মধ্যেই শেষ করতে
হবে। সে ফেইথকে বলে রাতের প্রার্থনা শেষে দ্রুত ঘুমিয়ে পড়তে। গুডম্যান ব্রাউন
শেষবারের মত ফেইথের কাছ থেকে বিদায় নেয় এবং মনে মনে চিন্তা করে যে ফেইথ হয়তো তার
এই যাত্রার পেছনের অশুভ উদ্দেশ্যের কথা আন্দাজ করতে পেরেছে।
গুডম্যান ব্রাউন
প্রতিজ্ঞা করে এই রাতের পর সে একজন ভালো মানুষ হয়ে যাবে। তারপর গুডম্যান ব্রাউন
একটি অন্ধকার বনের রাস্তা দিয়ে এগোতে থাকে। রাস্তার পাশের গাছগুলো দেখে সে ভয় পায়,
সে ভাবতে থাকে গাছগুলোর পিছনে কী থাকতে
পারে। তার মনে হয়, গাছগুলোর
পেছনে হয়তো ইন্ডিয়ানরা লুকিয়ে আছে অথবা শয়তান নিজেই গাছগুলোর পেছনে লুকিয়ে বসে
আছে।
এসব ভাবতে না ভাবতেই রাস্তায় একজন একজন বৃদ্ধ মানুষের সাথে দেখা হয় গুডম্যান
ব্রাউনের। সে এতক্ষণ গুডম্যান ব্রাউনের জন্যই অপেক্ষা করছিল। তারপর দুজন পাশাপাশি
হাটতে লাগলো৷ গুডম্যানব্রাউনের এই সহযাত্রীর বয়স প্রায় পঞ্চাশ। লোকটা স্বাভাবিক
কাপড় পরে ছিল এবং তাকে দেখতেও সাধারণ মানুষের মতোই লাগছিল কিন্তু তার হাতে হাঁটার
জন্য একটা লাঠি ছিল।
লাঠিটা দেখতে একটা সাপের আকৃতির মতো ছিলো এবং লাঠিটা দেখে মনে
হচ্ছে যেন জীবন্ত সাপ নড়ছে। বৃদ্ধ লোকটি গুডম্যান ব্রাউনকে তার লাঠিটা দিতে চায়
এবং বলে যে লাঠিটা তাকে দ্রুত হাটতে সাহায্য করবে। কিন্তু গুডম্যান ব্রাউন লাঠিটা
নেয় না। গুডম্যান ব্রাউন বলে যে সে তার সভায় যাওয়ার কথা দিয়েছিল বলে সে এসেছে,
এবং তা শেষ হলে সে তার গ্রামে ফিরে যাবে।
গুডম্যান ব্রাউন লোকটিকে বলে, সে
খ্রিষ্টান পরিবারের সন্তান এবং তার পরিবারের সবাই ভাল মানুষ;
এখন এই লোকটির সাথে সম্পৃক্ত থাকায় তার
নিজের উপর লজ্জা হচ্ছে। লোকটি উত্তরে বলে যে সে গুডম্যান ব্রাউনের বাবা এবং দাদাকে
চিনতো, নিউ ইংল্যান্ডের সব
গির্জার সদস্যদের সে চেনে এবং এমনকি রাজ্যের গভর্নরকেও সে চেনে। লোকটির কথা
গুডম্যান ব্রাউনকে দ্বিধায় ফেলে দেয়।
এরপরেও সে বলে সে গ্রামে ফিরে যেতে চায়
ফেইথের জন্য। এই মুহুর্তে তারা একজন বৃদ্ধ মহিলাকে বনের মধ্যে দিয়ে কষ্ট করে হেটে
আসতে দেখে। গুডম্যান ব্রাউন মহিলাটিকে চিনতে পারে, ইনি তার গ্রামের একজন ধার্মিক মহিলা,
এনার নাম গুডি ক্লয়েস(Goody
Cloyse). মহিলাটি তাকে দেখে
ফেলতে পারে ভেবে সে লুকিয়ে পড়ে। এদিকে বৃদ্ধ লোকটি গিয়ে ওই মহিলার কাধে টোকা দেয়।
মহিলাটি বৃদ্ধ লোকটিকে চিনতে পারে যে বৃদ্ধ লোকটি আসলে শয়তান এবং মহিলাটি নিজেকে
ডাইনি হিসেবে নিজের আসল পরিচয় দেয়। সে বনে শয়তানের অশুভ অনুষ্ঠানে যোগ দেওয়ার
উদ্দেশ্যে যাচ্ছিলো। গুডম্যান ব্রাউন এসব কিছু দেখার পরেও বৃদ্ধ লোকটিকে বলে সে
তার গ্রামে ফিরে যেতে চায় ফেইথের কাছে। লোকটি গুডম্যান ব্রাউনকে বিশ্রাম নিতে বলে।
অদৃশ্য হয়ে যাওয়ার আগে লোকটি গুডম্যান ব্রাউনকে একটি লাঠি দেয় এবং বলে যদি তার
সিদ্ধান্ত বদলায় তাহলে সে এই জিনিসটা ব্যবহার করে অনুষ্ঠানে আসতে পারবে। এবার যখন
গুডম্যান ব্রাউন বসে বসে চিন্তা করছিলো এসব কি হচ্ছে,
তখন সে রাস্তায় ঘোড়ার পায়ের শব্দ শুনতে
পায় এবং আবার লুকিয়ে পড়ে। কিছুক্ষণ পরে সে তার গ্রামের মিনিস্টার (Minister)
ধর্মযাজক গুকিনের (Deacon
Gookin) কন্ঠ শুনতে পায়। তারাও শয়তানের অশুভ
অনুষ্ঠানে যোগ দিতে যাচ্ছিলো।
বিস্মিত গুডম্যান ব্রাউন শপথ করে যে পৃথিবীর সবাই
শয়তানের পথে গেলেও সে ফেইথের জন্য সত্য এবং স্রষ্টার পথে থাকবে। কিন্তু একটু পরেই
সে একটা কন্ঠস্বর শুনতে পায়, যেটা
শুনে তার ফেইথের কন্ঠস্বর বলে মনে হয়। সে তার নাম ধরে চিৎকার এবং আকাশ থেকে একটা
গোলাপি রঙের রিবন উড়ে আসে। এবার যখন সে দেখলো ফেইথও শয়তানের দলে যোগ দিয়েছে,
ভালোর উপর তার বিশ্বাস উঠে গেলো। গুডম্যান
ব্রাউন লোকটার দেওয়া লাঠিটা ধরলো যেটা তাকে দ্রুত অনুষ্ঠানের দিকে টেনে নিয়ে গেলো।
যখন সে অনুষ্ঠানের কাছে পৌঁছালো সে দেখলো সেখানকার আশে-পাশের সব গাছে আগুন জ্বলছে।
এ আগুনের আলোই অনুষ্ঠানে অংশ নেওয়া সকলের চেহারা দেখা যাচ্ছিলো। সেখানে সমাজের
অসাধু মানুষের সাথে সাথে সমাজের বিভিন্ন সম্মানী মানুষজন এবং ইন্ডিয়ান ধর্মযাজকরাও
ছিলো। কিন্তু সে ফেইথকে দেখতে পেলো না এবং আবারো আশা করতে শুরু করলো যে হয়তো ফেইথ
ওখানে নেই।
অনুষ্ঠানে এবার পাথরের উপর একটা আকৃতির আবির্ভাব হয় এবং সমবেত জনতাকে
বলে ধর্মান্তরকারীদের সামনে আনতে। এসময় গুডম্যান ব্রাউনের মনে হয় তার মৃত বাবার অবয়ব
তাকে ইশারা করে সামনে ডাকছে এবং তার মৃত মায়ের অবয়ব চেষ্টা করছে তাকে না এগোতে
দিতে। তার সিদ্ধান্তটা পূর্নবিবেচনা করার আগেই মিনিস্টার এবং ধর্মযাজক গুকিন তাকে
ধরে সামনে নিয়ে আসে।
গুডি ক্লয়েস এবং মাথা কাপড়ে মোড়া আরো একজনকে সামনে নিয়ে আসা
হলো, কাপড়ে মোড়া থাকায়
তাকে চেনা যাচ্ছিল না। পৃথিবীর সকল খারাপ কাজকে তাদের সামনে উন্মোচিত করার
সিদ্ধান্তের কথা জানিয়ে সমবেত জনতা এই দুজনকে নিজেদের একে অপরকে দেখাতে বলল।
গুডম্যান দেখল যে এই দুজন ধর্মান্তরকারীদের মধ্যে একজন হলো ফেইথ। গুডম্যান ব্রাউন
ফেইথকে বলে আকাশের দিকে তাকাতে এবং অশুভ শক্তির বিরোধিতা করতে।
এরপরে হঠাৎ করে
গুডম্যান ব্রাউন আবিষ্কার করল যে বিজন রাতে বনের মধ্যে সে একেবারেই একা। শুনতে পেলো বাতাসের শো শো আওয়াজ। পরের
দিন সকালবেলায় গুডম্যান ব্রাউনকে সালেম গ্রামের রাস্তায় ধীরভাবে হাঁটতে দেখা যায়,
হতবিহবল মনে হচ্ছিল তাকে। সে দোটানায়
ভুগতে থাকে। পথে তার সাথে যাদের দেখা হয়, সবাইকে তার অশুভ বলে মনে হয়।
গ্রামের মিনিস্টারের সাথে তার দেখা হয় যে তাকে
আশীর্বাদ দেয় কিন্তু সে মিনিস্টারের দেয়া আশীর্বাদ গ্রহণ করে না। গুডম্যান ব্রাউন
ধর্মযাজক গুকিনকে যাদুকর বলে ডাকে। গুডম্যান ব্রাউন গুডি ক্লয়েসকে দেখে একটা ছোট
মেয়েকে বাইবেলের কিছু লাইন সম্পর্কে পড়াতে এবং গুডি ক্লয়েসের কাছ থেকে মেয়েটিকে
কেড়ে নিয়ে যায়। অবশেষে নিজের বাড়িতে ফেইথের সাথে তার দেখা হয় কিন্তু সে ফেইথকে
অভিবাদন জানায় না।
স্ত্রীর দিকে রূঢ় ও কড়া দৃষ্টিতে তাকালো গুডম্যান ব্রাউন। গুডম্যান
ব্রাউন কি তাহলে গতরাতে বনের মধ্যে ঘুমিয়ে পড়েছিল? শয়তানের অশুভ অনুষ্ঠানের ঘটনাটি কি তাহলে বুনো স্বপ্ন ছিলো?
বনের মধ্যের ঘটনা স্বপ্ন ছিলো কিনা তা
অনিশ্চিত কিন্তু অবশিষ্ট জীবনের জন্য গুডম্যান ব্রাউন বদলে যায়। রাতে তার সাথে ঘটে
যাওয়া ঘটনা তার মনে গেঁথে থাকে।
ঐ ঘটনার দ্বারা সে গভীরভাবে আন্দোলিত হয় এবং সে
যে খ্রিস্টান সম্প্রদায়ে বাস করে তার সেই বিশ্বাস বিকৃত হয়। সে গ্রামের সবার উপর
আস্থা হারিয়ে ফেলে এবং সে কারো কথাই আর বিশ্বাস করতে পারে না। সে তার wife
কেও আর পুরোপুরি ভালোবাসতে পারেনা।
গুডম্যান ব্রাউন তার বাকি জীবন ভয়, সন্দেহ আর বিষন্নতার মধ্যে বেঁচে থাকে।
English Summary:-
At sunset in the town of Salem, Massachusetts, a
man named Goodman Brown has just stepped over the threshold of the front door
of his house. Goodman Brown leaves his wife, Faith, to attend to some unknown
business in the forest outside of Salem. Faith, wearing pink ribbons in her
cap, asks him to stay with her, saying that she feels scared when she is by
herself and free to think troubling thoughts. Goodman Brown tells her that he
must travel for one night only and reminds her to say her prayers and go to bed
early.
Despite Faith's pleas to remain at home, Goodman
Brown continues his quest. Goodman Brown sets off on a road through a gloomy
forest. As he enters the woods, Goodman Brown fears danger and evil around
every tree, either supernatural or the threat of a Native attack.
He soon comes upon a man in the road who greets
Goodman Brown as though he had been expecting him. The man is dressed in
regular clothing and looks normal except for a walking stick he carries. This
walking stick features a carved serpent, which is so lifelike it seems to move.
The man offers it to Goodman Brown, saying that it might help him walk faster,
but Goodman Brown refuses.
He says that he showed up for their meeting because
he promised to do so but does not wish to touch the staff and wants to return
to the village. Goodman Brown tells the man that his family members have been
Christians and good people for generations and that he feels ashamed to
associate with him. The man replies that he knew Goodman Brown’s father and
grandfather, as well as other members of churches in New England, and even the
governor of the state.
The man’s words confuse Goodman Brown, who says
that even if this is so, he wants to return to the village for Faith’s sake. At
that moment, the two come upon an old woman hobbling through the woods, and
Goodman Brown recognizes Goody Cloyse, who he knows to be a pious, respected
woman from the village. He hides, embarrassed to be seen with the man, and the
man taps Goody Cloyse on the shoulder. She identifies him as the devil and
reveals herself to be a witch, on her way to the devil’s evil forest ceremony.
Goodman Brown intends to turn back for the sake
of his wife, Faith. The man says that Goodman Brown should rest. Before
disappearing, he gives Goodman Brown his staff, telling him that he can use it
for transport to the ceremony if he changes his mind.As he continues his
journey, Goodman Brown hears voices approaching and hides. He sees the minister
and Deacon Gookin, both upstanding pious men, seemingly on their way to the
ceremony.
Shocked, Goodman Brown swears that even though
everyone else in the world has gone to the devil, for Faith’s sake he will stay
true to God. However, he soon hears voices coming from the ceremony and thinks
he recognizes Faith’s voice. He screams her name, and a pink ribbon from her
cap flutters down from the sky.
Seeing that everything has turned evil, Goodman
Brown fears that Faith herself may have turned evil as well. Grabbing the staff
the old man gave him, he is quickly transported to a large clearing surrounded
by fire where the ceremony is taking place. In the light of the flames, he sees
more members of the community.
A new figure appears and tells the congregation
to prepare the new converts. Goodman Brown thinks he sees his father beckoning
him forward and his mother trying to hold him back. Before he can rethink his
decision, the minister and Deacon Gookin drag him forward. Goody Cloyse and
Martha Carrier bring forth another person, robed and covered so that her
identity is unknown.
After telling the two that they have made a decision that
will reveal all the wickedness of the world to them, the figure tells them to
show themselves to each other. Goodman Brown sees that the other convert is
Faith. Begging his wife to resist the temptation of evil, Goodman Brown
suddenly finds himself alone in the forest.
The next morning Goodman Brown returns to Salem
Village. Now Goodman Brown sees the people he saw in the forest acting as they
always had, but he believes he now knows the truth. Their hypocrisy disgusts
him. He sees the minister, who blesses him, and hears Deacon Gookin praying,
but he refuses to accept the blessing and calls Deacon Gookin a wizard. He sees
Goody Cloyse quizzing a young girl on Bible verses and snatches the girl away.Finally, he sees Faith at his own house and refuses to greet her. It’s unclear
whether the encounter in the forest was a dream, but for the rest of his life,
Goodman Brown is changed. He doesn’t trust anyone in his village, can’t believe
the words of the minister, and doesn’t fully love his wife. He lives the
remainder of his life in gloom and fear.
