- Character_List:- (Seize the Day By S.Bellow)
Tommy Wilhelm
Tommy Wilhelm, the protagonist of Seize the Day, is a character of different occupations. He is burdened by the loss of his job, financial instability, the separation of his wife, and his relationship with his father, among other things and also he is unsatisfied with his present moment.
Dr. Adler

Dr. Tamkin
Dr. Tamkin is the most hypocritic person in the drama. He himself claims to be many things, but what is true is difficult to surmise. He claims that he is a psychiatrist, a healer, a poet, a stock market specialist, that he has tended to the Egyptian royal family and that he is, among other things, a master inventor. He is the man who pretentiously tries to support Wilhelm .
Maurice Venice -
Maurice Venice in the scout who took Wilhelm to Hollywood promising fame at a very young age. He convinced Wilhelm to start with a small role and later ditched him saying he was no good. Later Wilhelm found out that Maurice actually ran a company of call girls and was a fraud. Maurice Venice initiated the utter fall of Wilhelm’s life.
Margaret
She is Wilhelm’s wife who had separated from him but disagreed to get a divorce. She wants to teach Wilhelm a lesson for cheating on her and keeps asking for more and more money from him for the sake of their two kids’ bringing up.
Olive
The woman with whom Tommy Wilhelm is in love. She is a Christian but is willing to marry Tommy outside the church after he divorces his wife. Wilhelm had the dearest of memories with her and wanted to marry her. She is the symbol of ultimate happiness for Wilhelm that had been out of his reach thus far.
Catherine
Tommy's sister and Dr. Adler's daughter. Catherine, is a married woman with a degree, a Bachelors of Science, from Bryn Mawr.
Mr. Rappaport
The blind, old man at the stock exchange who cannot see so asked Tommy to help him. Mr. Rappaport appears in several chapters as a symbolic figure of "blindness."
Mr. Perls
A breakfast companion of Dr. Adler. Perls is a salesman and a man resented by Tommy for taking the role of what Tommy believes to be that of a "buffer."

- English_Summary:- (Seize the Day By S.Bellow)
Seize the Day is a literary novel by Saul Bellow published in 1956, it received a nomination for the 1957 National Book Award for Fiction.
Tommy Wilhelm is a man in his mid-forties, temporarily living in the Hotel Gloriana on the Upper West Side of New York City, the same hotel in which his father has taken residence for a number of years. He can't keep up with the other members of the hotel because they all are older than Tommy. As the novel opens, Tommy plans to take breakfast with his father on the twenty-third floor.
But this morning feels different to Tommy, he feels a certain degree of fear and of foreboding for something that lies in the hours ahead of him and has been building for quite some time. Tommy doesn’t have any money, and so he hides the letters before Dr. Adler sees them.
Then the story turns into a flashback of Tommy's earlier life. The story begins with excluding of Tommy from his job as a salesman, he is a college drop-out, a man with two children, recently separated from his wife, and he is a man on the brink of financial disaster. The chapters that follow focus on Tommy's encounters and conversations with Dr. Tamkin, a seemingly fraudulent and questionable "psychologist," who gives Tommy endless advice and thus provides the assistance he had looked for from his father. (Seize the Day By S.Bellow)
Tamkin holds a power of attorney over Tommy’s dwindling savings. If Tommy’s latest land investment falls through, there won’t be any money left for Tamkin to manage. Tamkin takes everything in his stride because he is an eternal optimist and he enjoys studying Tommy’s pessimistic personality. Tamkin finally tells Tommy to stop worrying because it’s no good for the soul. He drags Tommy down to the brokerage office to see how the investments are going. Some prices are down, but others hold steady.
Tamkin explains that he recently invested some money in a hedge of rye, and this should offset some unexpected losses. Tommy wonders why he gives Tamkin so much power over his finances because his investments never turn out well. Buoyed by a morning at the brokerage office, Tamkin takes Tommy for lunch. They talk about Margaret, Dr. Adler, and Olive, Tommy’s mistress. Tommy loves Olive but he cannot divorce Margaret. After distracting Tommy with life and love advice, Tamkin leaves Tommy with the expensive lunch bill before excusing himself temporarily.
An hour or so passes, and Tamkin never returns. Tommy gives up waiting and heads back to the brokerage office. Here, everything falls apart. The rye price dropped, and now there is nothing left. Tommy is officially bankrupt. Tamkin disappeared without a trace because he had always planned to waste Tommy’s money.
Amid all of this, he has, apparently, fallen in love with a woman named Olive, who he cannot marry because his wife will not grant him a divorce. Tommy is unhappy and in need of assistance both emotionally and financially. It is also within these beginning chapters that the flashbacks begin. The flashbacks highlight, among other things, Tommy's meeting with the duplicitous Maurice Venice, the talent scout who shows initial interest in a young Tommy and his good looks.
Wilhelm, however, is later rejected by the same scout after a failed screen test but nevertheless attempts a career in Hollywood as an actor. He discontinues his college education and moves to California, against his parent's will and warnings.
Broken and penniless, Tommy returns to the hotel. He begs his father to cover this month’s rent bill, but Dr. Adler refuses. He says that it is time Tommy went home to Margaret or got a proper job. Tommy calls Margaret, but all she cares about is maintenance money. She does not want him home unless he returns to the sales job. Tommy cannot stand the thought of working in sales again, and so he hangs up the phone. He recognizes that he is alone in the world.
No one cares what happens to him. He wanders the streets, finding himself caught up in a funeral procession. When he realizes the deceased is barely older than him, he sees his own life passing him by. Now, he must seize the day.
