কাহিনীর শুরুতেই দেখা যায় টেলসন ব্যাংকের ম্যানেজার জার্ভিস লরিকে তার দেহরক্ষী জেরী ক্রানছার একটি পত্র এনে দেয়। লরি এই চিঠিটা পাঠায় তাঁর পুরনো বন্ধু ডাক্তার ম্যানেটের নিকটে যে কিনা ১৮ বছর যাবত বন্দী হয়ে আছে বাস্তিল দুর্গে। দীর্ঘদিন কারাভোগের পর অবশেষে মিস্টার ম্যানেট মুক্তিলাভ করেন। ওদিকে মিস্টার ম্যানেটের মেয়ে লুচি ম্যানেট।লরি তাঁর সাথে দেখা করে এবং তাঁকে জানায় যে তাঁর(লুচির) বাবা এখনো জীবিত। অথচ লুচি এতদিন তাঁর বাবার কোন খবরই জানতো না তাই সে তাঁকে মৃত ভেবেছিল। এরপর লুচিকে নিয়ে লরি ফ্রান্সে রওয়ানা হন লুচির বাবার সাথে তাঁকে(লুচিকে) দেখা করানোর উদ্দেশ্যে। দীর্ঘদিন কারাভোগের পর মিস্টার ম্যানেট পাগলের মতো আচরণ করে। প্রায়শই তাঁকে দেখা যায় যে সে জুতা সেলাই করতেছে।
তাই অনেকদিন পর যখন প্রথমবার মিস্টার ম্যানেটের সাথে তাঁর মেয়ে লুচির দেখা হয় মিস্টার ম্যানেট লুচিকে চিনতে পারে না কিন্তু পরে মিসেস ম্যানেটের মুখের সাথে লুচির মুখের মিল খুঁজে পায় এবং লুচিকে চিনতে পারে। বাস্তিল দুর্গে থেকে থেকে মিস্টার ম্যানেট তাঁর পূর্ব স্মৃতি হারিয়ে ফেলে কিন্তু লুসির পরিচর্যায় সে আবার সুস্থ হয়ে ওঠে এবং কিছুদিন পর লুচিকে নিয়ে তার বাবা প্যারিস থেকে লন্ডনে চলে আসে ।
প্যারিসে এসে মিস্টার ম্যানেট ও তাঁর মেয়ে লুচি, আর্নেস্ট দেফার্জ নামের এক মদ ব্যবসায়ীর বাড়িতে আশ্রয় নেয়৷ আর্নেস্ট দেফার্জের স্ত্রী মাদাম দেফার্জ ছিলেন অভিজাতদের চিরশত্রু। তিনি সবসময় চুপচাপ থাকতেন এবং তিনি তাঁদের নামগুলো তালিকাভুক্ত করতেন যাঁদেরকে বিনাদোষে মেরে ফেলা হতো বিপ্লবী গণ্য করে। উপন্যাসের নায়ক চার্লস ডার্নে। সে একজন ফরাসী বংশধর।
যদিও সে অনেক অভিজাত বংশে জন্মগ্রহণ করেছিল কিন্তু সে তার বাবা-চাচাদের মতো অতটা নিষ্ঠুর ছিল না। সে সবসময় অসহায়দের ভালোবাসতো, তাঁদের বিপদে আপদে সাহায্য করতো। এমনকি সে তাঁর চাচার নিষ্ঠুর ব্যবহারের জন্য তাঁকে(ডার্নের চাচাকে) ছেড়ে লন্ডনে চলে যায়৷ আর সেখানেই লুচির সাথে তাঁর পরিচয় হয়। কিছুদিনের মধ্যেই তাঁদের(লুচি ও ডার্নের) মধ্যে প্রণয়ের সম্পর্ক গড়ে ওঠে এবং তাঁরা বিবাহবন্ধনে আবদ্ধ হয়।
কিন্তু তখনও লুচি জানতো না যে ডার্নে একজন ফরাসী কিন্তু লুচির বাবা জানতো। তারপরও মেয়ের সুখের জন্য সে(লুচির বাবা) ডার্নেকে তার জামাতা বলে মেনে নেয় যদিও ডার্নের মতো অভিজাত পরিবারের জন্যই হাজার হাজার নিরপরাধকে বাস্তিল দুর্গের অন্ধকারে রাতের পর রাত কাটাতে হয়েছে এমনকি তাঁকেও। এর আগে অবশ্য ডার্নে যখন মামলায় জড়িয়ে যায় তখন সিডনি কার্টন নামের একজন ভদ্রলোক ডার্নের পক্ষে ওকালতি করে তাঁকে কারাভোগের হাত থেকে বাঁচায়।
সিডনি কার্টনও মনে মনে লুচিকে ভালোবাসতো কিন্তু সে ছিল বদ্ধ মাতাল। যখন লুচি ডার্নেকে বিয়ে করে তখন সে কিছুটা কষ্ট পায় কিন্তু সে লুচিকে বলে যে জীবন দিয়ে হলেও সে সর্বদা লুচির ভালো চাইবে। সিডনি ও ডার্নে আবার দেখতে অবিকল একই রকম ছিল। গ্যাবেল নামের একজন চাকর ডার্নেদের সম্পত্তির রক্ষণাবেক্ষণ করতো। অভিজাত পরিবারের সাথে তাঁর যোগসূত্র থাকায় বিপ্লবীরা তাঁকে আটক করে আর সেই সাথে ডার্নের চাচাকেও বন্দি করে।
তখন গ্যাবেল ডার্নের কাছে চিঠি লিখে সাহায্য চায়। চিঠি পেয়ে ডার্নে যখন তাঁদের সাহায্য করতে যায় তখন বিপ্লবীরা ডার্নেকেও আটক করে। মাদাম দেফার্জ সাক্ষ্য দেন যে ডার্নের চাচা ও তাঁর(ডার্নের বাবা) ভাই মিলে তাঁর(মাদার দেফার্জের) ভাইদের হত্যা করেছে এবং তাঁর(মাদাম দেফার্জের) বোনকে ধর্ষণ করেছে। তাই অভিজাতদের বংশধর হবার কারণে ডার্নেসহ সমস্ত আটককৃত অভিজাতদের মৃত্যুদন্ড দেবার ঘোষনা দেয় বিপ্লবীরা।
এই খবর সিডনি কার্টন পেলে সে লুচির কাছে বলে যে ডার্নেকে বাঁচাবার জন্য সে তাঁর নিজের জীবন বিসর্জন দিবে৷ তাই কার্টন ডার্নের সাথে দেখা করার ভান করে কারাগারে যায় এবং ডার্নেকে বের করে দিয়ে নিজে সেখানে থেকে যায়। পরে তাঁকে(সিডনিকে) মৃত্যুদন্ড দেয়া হয় ডার্নে মনে করে। আর ডার্নে ও লুচি সুযোগ বুঝেই তাঁদের বাড়ি থেকে পালিয়ে যায় বিপ্লবীদের হাত থেকে বাঁচার জন্য। এখানেই উপন্যাসটি শেষ হয়।
উপন্যাসটি French Revolution এর আদলে লেখা। উপন্যাসটিতে ফরাসী বিপ্লবের সমসাময়িক ঘটনাগুলোই তুলে ধরেছেন লেখক। কিভাবে অভিজাত শ্রেণী তাঁদের নিষ্ঠুর কার্যক্রম চালাতো অসহায় গরীবদের উপর সেটাই ডিকেন্স তুলে ধরবার চেষ্টা করেছেন এখানে।
Bengali Summary:-
At the beginning of the story, Telson brings bank manager Jarvis Laurie a letter from his bodyguard Jerry Cranach. Laurie sends this letter to his old friend Doctor Manet who has been imprisoned in the Bastille for 18 years. After a long imprisonment, Mr. Manet was finally released. On the other hand, Mr. Manet's daughter is Lucie Manet.Laurie meets him and informs him that his (Lucci's) father is still alive. But Lucci did not know any news of his father so he thought him dead. Then Laurie left for France with Lucci to meet Lucci's father. After a long imprisonment, Mr. Manet behaves like a madman. He is often seen sewing shoes.
So after a long time when Mr. Manette first meets his daughter Lucci Mr. Manette doesn't recognize Lucci but later finds the similarity of Lucci's face with Mrs. Manette's face and recognizes Lucci. While in the Bastille, Mr. Manet loses his former memory but is restored to health by Lucy's care, and a few days later, his father moves from Paris to London with Lucie.
Arriving in Paris, Mr. Manet and his daughter Lucie take refuge in the home of a wine merchant named Ernest Defarge. Ernest Defarge's wife, Madame Defarge, was the archenemy of the aristocracy. He was always silent and he listed the names of those who were innocently killed as revolutionaries. The hero of the novel is Charles Dern. He is of French descent. Although he was born in a very aristocratic family, he was not as cruel as his parents and uncles.
He always loved the helpless, helped them in times of danger. He even leaves him (Dern's uncle) for London because of his uncle's cruel treatment And there he met Lucci. Within a few days, they (Lucci and Dern) fell in love and got married. But still Lucci didn't know that Derne was a Frenchman but Lucci's father did. Still he (Lucci's father) accepts Derne as his son-in-law for the sake of his daughter's happiness, even though thousands of innocents have to spend night after night in the darkness of the Bastille for noble families like Derne.
Earlier, however, when Dern was involved in the case, a gentleman named Sidney Carton advocated for Dern and saved him from imprisonment. Sidney Carton also loved Lucci but he was a drunkard. When Lucci marries Darnay, she is a little hurt but she tells Lucci that she will always want Lucci's best, even with her life. Sidney and Dern looked exactly the same again.
A servant named Gable looked after Darned's property. Because of his connections to an aristocratic family, the revolutionaries arrested him as well as Dern's uncle. Gable then wrote to Dern asking for help. When Derne went to help them after receiving the letter, the revolutionaries arrested Derne as well. Madame Defarge testified that Darn's uncle and her (Darn's father) brother killed her (Mother Defarge's) brothers and raped her (Madame Defarge's) sister.
Therefore, the revolutionaries announced the execution of all the arrested nobles, including Derne, because they were descendants of the nobles. When Sidney Carton gets the news, he tells Lucci that he will sacrifice his own life to save Darnay. So Carton goes to the prison, pretending to meet Darne, and gets Darne out and stays there himself. Later he (Sydney) was sentenced to death, Darn thinks. And Darnay and Lucci took the opportunity to escape from their home to escape from the revolutionaries. This is where the novel ends.
The novel is based on the French Revolution. In the novel, the author has highlighted the contemporary events of the French Revolution. Here, Dickens tried to show how the elite class carried out their cruel activities on the helpless poor.
